Ronald McDonald House
From a commercial eighties office development to a nurturing home away from home for families of children undergoing long term treatment.
After nearly 18 months of investigating many existing buildings around Grafton the RMD board purchased a 1980s development office building tucked away in a Domain side valley fronting Grafton Road.
This 3 storey building has undergone the first stage of an internal conversion into 18 apartments specifically designed to cater to the needs of parents staying in Auckland while their children receive specialist treatment at the nearby Starship Hospital.
Stage 1 comprises the conversion of 3 floors including the carpark in the southern half of the office floors.
The shared kitchen and lounge amenities were accommodated in the former carpark. Part of a higher level rear carpark has been excavated to form a north facing outdoor play courtyard.
A steel bridge allows building users secure access directly into the second floor from Grafton Road.
RMcD House relies on the generous support of corporate sponsors such as Fisher & Paykel and would welcome any new construction trade sponsors for the upcoming stages.
